The First Week of School 2007

We are up and running at full speed in all of our academic areas. Our first 3rd-5th grade assembely was this morning and it went very well. We learned about eight national holidays that are celebrated in the United States including Labor Day. We will be interviewing someone at home about the work they do and writing an informational article, first draft. We worked on building rectangular arrays with tiles up to 25. Some students need to finish it for homework. In History Alive today we focused on social skills. We learned about getting the facts before a conflict occurs. In Science we learned about the states of matter. Specifically about the cycle of water from a solid to a liquid to a gas. A lot of students had a lot of questions about dry ice and liquid nitrogen. Dr. Hallock from UT will be bringing both to demonstrate. We had our first Friday drawing and went on a virtual spy misson with Ms. Hanna in art. What a great first week! No school on Monday. See you Tuesday!

Thursday Folders

Today we had an assembly to review the cafeteria expectations. Mrs. Firestone was here and gave tne presentation. When every fifth grade class has earned a spoon, all fifth grade students will be able to select there own seat. We worked on what a quality Reader's Response looks like and we looked at examples. In History Alive we previewed Chapter One and we read. In science we role played the opposite of what safety should be. It was really fun! Now we know how to be safe during our science labs. Thursday folders and planners will be checked tomorrow.

Building a Classroom Community

Today we started our day in Art with Mrs. Hanna. We then completed a vest and a self-portrait to help get to know each other more. Stop by the fifth grade hallway board in a couple of days and take a peek. We also participated in a team building activity called "Warp Speed", and read a book called "First Day Jitters". Tonight our homework is to read for at least 20 minutes and record the time in our reading log. We also have a problem in our math journal to complete.
